The cute, retro-inspired Renault 5 all-electric hatchback is set to be shown in concept form at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed on June 23.
The 5 EV will be displayed on Electric Avenue at the Festival, marking the first time it’s been on display in the United Kingdom.
The new Renault 5 concept was first revealed in early 2021, and is inspired by the 1972 original.
Renault 5 prototype
The angular design of the original has been modernised, but crucial details like the shape of the hatchback, the rear light signature, and the windowline have been carried over.
Renault has confirmed the all-electric city hatchback will make debut in production form during 2022, ahead of production kicking off in 2024.
Under the skin, the Renault 5 will make use of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s CMF-BEV electric platform. It’s designed for Volkswagen Polo-sized cars, and promises to cut the price of new electric cars by one third.
Renault still hasn’t revealed details of the electric hatchback’s power and torque outputs, battery size, and range. It’s understood the CMF-BEV platform can offer up to 400km of range on WLTP testing.
A new Nissan Micra electric city car, as previously teased, will also be based on the platform beneath the Renault 5, as will a high-performance Alpine version.
Renault’s retro revolution won’t end with the upcoming 5. The brand’s electric rollout will include the Renault 4-inspired 4ever SUV, which was recently leaked in patent images, as well as a potential reborn Scenic crossover.
Renault Megane E-Tech Electric
Also set for display at Goodwood in Electric Avenue is the Megane E-Tech Electric small SUV.
This electric vehicle (EV) is confirmed to be coming to Australia, with first deliveries expected near the end of 2023.
The chic little crossover will broaden Renault Australia’s electric range, with the Kangoo E-Tech electric van on track to arrive locally in early 2023.
The Renault Megane E-Tech is the French brand’s answer to the Kia Niro, Hyundai Kona Electric, MG ZS EV, Volkswagen ID.3, Tesla Model 3, and Tesla Model Y, among others.
Renault 5 Maxi Turbo
The Megane E-Tech made its world premiere in September 2021, but priority markets such as those in Europe will receive first allocations, given ongoing supply constraints.
As for the more old-fashioned Renault metal on show at Goodwood Festival of Speed? The Renault 5 Maxi Turbo Superproduction will be sent up the hill with French rally driver Alain Serpaggi at the wheel.
This iconic hatchback from the 1980s is powered by a mid-mounted 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 283kW of power.
Renault RS10
It became a cult classic partially due to its participation in Group B rallying.
There will also be a 1979 Renault RS10 F1 car driven by French former F1 driver René Arnoux.
The racer is best known for being the first turbocharged F1 car to win a Grand Prix, and it sparked a new turbocharged era in Formula One.
